From October 20-22, Scouts from Troop 376 embarked on a wet, muddy, windy, and all-around AWESOME orienteering adventure at West Point’s Lake Frederick. Organized and run by cadets from the U.S. Military Academy’s Orienteering Team, the Scouts learned the ins and outs of using a map and compass to navigate a course, reaching specific objectives along the way.
The Scouts set up camp on Friday night and spent Saturday morning training with our assigned cadet guide. Breaking into smaller groups of 2-3, they ran two orienteering courses on Saturday afternoon before getting a small taste of what military training is like. The Scouts were given the opportunity to inspect and try on gear, as well as run through a drill-style exercise. Saturday evening wrapped up with a chili competition (which we inexplicably did not win) and a large bonfire.
The final (and most challenging) orienteering course took place on Sunday morning. Our Scouts did extremely well – and as leaders and parents, we couldn’t be prouder! Neither rain, nor mud, nor canopy-destroying wind stopped these Scouts from having a blast. This was an overnight they’ll be sure to remember!
